Dream-pop newcomers Sunday (1994) inspire devotion on their first headline tour.
With BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend dominating the music scene in Liverpool this weekend, it would be easy to overlook shows taking place at local venues. Far away from the crowds at Sefton Park, the Arts Club Loft provides an intimate setting, perfect for absorbing the dreamy nostalgia provided by Sunday (1994).
Opening the night was Beaux, performing songs from their debut EP. Their set was defined by youthful energy and songs reminiscent of the early days of YouTube musicians, or the soundtrack from a mid-2000s indie film. They are sure to find a loyal following, if the crowd response at the Arts Club is any indication.
Dream-pop trio Sunday (1994) are based in California, but hail not only from Los Angeles (Paige Turner), but also Slough (Lee Newell) and Peru (Puma), they are joined on tour by another Los Angeles native (Lola Collette) on bass. After years of writing music for other people, the band have embarked on their first headline tour, and it is safe to say that they have risen to the occasion.

When Sunday (1994) took to the stage it was easy to see that they have attracted a devout following. The crowd eagerly offered up their devotion, readily singing along to songs from their recently released deluxe EP which was released just earlier this month, and favourites from their previous EP released last year.
The chemistry between the band is palpable, making it hard to take your eyes off of them as they are so at ease with each other and with the crowd.
Paige Turner’s vocals are truly undeniable and her stage presence magnetic. During “Blossom”, she entered the crowd with a placard reading lines from the chorus: “you got it baby”. Perfectly encapsulating Sunday (1994)’s recurring theme of the uncertainty of girlhood and mental health, but with the optimism that perhaps everything can change.

At the end of the night, singer Paige Turner assures the crowd that she will see us all very soon. Hopefully this won’t be the last we see of the band in Liverpool.
Playing soon at the Warrington NBHD Weekender and in Glasgow, Sunday (1994) are not to be missed.
